Chocolate Skillet Cake with Ice Cream


For the cake:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

For the ice cream:

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract


  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 10-inch cast-iron skillet with butter.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together milk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract.
  4. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Fold in chocolate chips.
  6. Pour batter into prepared skillet and smooth out the top with a spatula.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  8. While cake is baking, prepare the ice cream. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together heavy cream, whole milk, sugar, and vanilla extract.
  9. Transfer mixture to an ice cream maker and churn according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  10. When cake is done, remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes.
  11. Serve cake warm with a scoop of homemade ice cream on top. Enjoy!
